The Overton Window describes the range of ideas that are tolerated in public discourse. Everything outside of it is considered "extreme", unplausible or fanatical, hallucinatory. Unthinkable. Irrational. Like flying harpies with horns who are surreptitiously responsible for anything from obstetric complications to spoiled food.
This window can be changed and moved depending on political climate, context, dissemination of an important discovery, and the kinds of things important figures are saying, repeatedly. These forces tug the window along a spectrum and suddenly things that were once unthinkable are plausible, sensible, popular in discussion-- finally they can become policy.
Adam's first wife, Lilith, who proposed to God being equal to your spouse, was considered in her time ridiculous; the unthinkable: A demon. Her demand for equality went far outside the window, resulting in immediate ejection from paradise. She was a phobic figure who lived in what could only be hell.
Her idea was so outside of the acceptable public discourse, it could be argued that, as its she lost her status as human. God has the ability to turn us into monsters, I guess, when we propose human rights.
But by today's standards, the tale of a human demanding equal treatment is somewhat less of a flying monster. We now do not believe stories of people shape shifting into supernatural when they get curious about their human rights. At least, I don't.
And Old Testament God is, to many now, safely referred to as a sort of tyrannically minded hallucination.
So asking for a little respect, is kind of just a normal human thing. Different context. The window here may de-demonize the demoness, just a bit.
Lilith... are you still a demon?
The Old Testament, and Mesopotamian doctrines for centuries have designated this mythical goddess as hypersexual demoness, who spread disease, killed women and children, and haunted the dreams of men.
In today's world, where we understand cell theory centuries ago, epidemiology, the female orgasm and obstetrics, as well as succubi... old testament's tales of the demoness fall to the wayside.
I find it somewhat disappointing when I see astrologers chortling of the supernaturality and the great demoness. At least, the schlock on message boards, the internet is mainly looking like women excited about Lilith as an irrational demon, and their own embodiment of a patriarchal, phobic trope.
Same goes for the frenzied fetish-- the Obsession with Scorpio, another piece to write-- Give it a rest, guys. Lilith is the seed modernity that makes us uncomfortable.
NEW UNDERDOGS IN POST-EDEN
Lilith can shed light on the person's perspective on the underdog, human rights, and how they feel about feminism, or non binary and queer matters, and so on. Downcasts, runaways, "illegals", refugees, and so on.
Not fitting in to "Paradise" is a banishment. A native of this asteroid believes things can change, and they will act in accordance with moving "the unthinkable" to "policy" status. A thinkable trajectory that by definition, begins off the grid. Or just adversely sitting back and embracing life as the "demonic" and the truant.
I believe that Lilith position can make the distinction between a person who sees another person "in a bad place", versus the static vision that she is a hag or a whore who is already dead to the world, and may be better off "ejected" from Paradise.
ASTEROID OF FEMICIDE
America's newly discovered prolific serial killer, Samuel Little (Lilith in Pisces, opposite Neptune) perfectly exemplifies the hostile compliment of the wayward woman; the identification with patriarchal Judeo-Christian God, and using this as justification for his actions of righteously eliminating non-conforming women from the Earthly realm.
Little claims in a recent interview from prison, laughing,-- that he believes that he was doing "God's work" by removing these women/trans women from society. Neptune is the planet of religion, as much as it is deluded thinking. People who "play God" will have Neptune in aspect to their subjects.
For example, Charles Manson had his Neptune 0 deg conjunction Mars in Virgo, in aspect to manipulative Scorpio Sun and patriarchal Capricorn Midheaven. Maybe this needs another article: Neptune and playing God)
I will cover Lilith as an indicator of femicide in a coming entry. In this post, I focus on her role in the charts of dissident figures.
LIFE GIVING / LIFE TAKING
Astrology says that this female goddess of chaos is the goddess of female agency, the most rudimentary forms of which include the decision of who lives and who dies, which is a reference to infanticide.
MODERN LILTH THEMES:
- A utopian question that deserves a go
- Exposing secrets, vulnerability in figures of power
- Saying what needs to be said / Bravery.
- Sacrificing your popularity
- Banishment / imprisonment
- Visionary instinct, interpreted as irrationality
- Dejection, punishment and violence towards oppressed people
I pulled up some charts of people who I thought might identify, using True Lilith.
Most of these people have been to prison for stupid reasons, (banishment),
A strong placement here entails people around you asking, "What in the hell are you doing?"
Lilith: Are you Demons ?
1. Malala Yousafi
The Unthinkable : Girls attending school in Taliban occupied Pakistan.
Unaspected Lilith (Rx) at 14 degrees Virgo, 1st house.
Lilith in Virgo is a woman who uses her power to "sanitize" and remove impurities.
Her political approach involves cleaning up a mess, and rearranging chaos into a new relative "chaos".
She will pick her enemy to pieces with her mind, all while maintaining dignity and humility.
-- the heavenly body nearest a bright 3rd decan Leo Ascendant.
Her Virgo Lilith is the most prominent in her appearance, and is the first thing that people will notice about her. Lilith here is fitting for a woman/girl's rights activist.
Her Lilith is unaspected, meaning that its energy is possibly in overdrive and out of reach to her, and not integrated into the personality. Unaspected planets feel invisible to the person and can be deceivingly strong. They can be overwhelming and consuming without her knowing, or explode into the person's life with no warning.
Being blind to her Rx Lilith's energy may have been an advantage, giving her out of bounds boldness and audacity that would be very difficult to a person who was aware.
Retrograde also means energy is turned inwards, and a lot happening mentally: talent in writing.
This energy is her personal brand, and carries a righteousness and scandalousness.
Unaspected Lilith is what I would call a Lilith "out of control", easily connected feminism surfacing in patriarchal extremism, making Yousafzai a tremendous black sheep to a culture.
2. Rosa Parks
The Unthinkable: Challenging segregation in the American South in the 50s.
Lilith 20 degrees Aquarius in 1st house, conjunct Sun
Like Malala, Parks' Lilith falls in the 1st house, so there is instant recognition and an undeniable radiation of these dissident qualities, and a unique personal brand.
Being a Sun conjunction in Aquarius, she is a natural activist, again, and a strong personal identity that is again black sheep in doing what she felt was necessary.
This is a very cerebral and prominent Aquarian placement that guarantees a feisty modus operandi.
3. Ai Wei Wei
The Unthinkable: To openly criticize Chinese government's stance on human rights.
Lilith 1 degree Pisces
As a filmmaker, the placement makes sense here, as Pisces and Neptune govern film, both are in positive flow with Lilith.
Pluto contacting Lilith is a person whose vision for equality is pinned under tyrannical events and people.
Lilith is clashes with a perfectionist Virgoan Pluto.
I see neurotic Pluto angry for disclosure of less than perfect secrets, via artistic media.
Ai Weiwei's generation had Virgo Pluto (b. 1958 - 1972), pointing to a group of souls who came here with an obsessive compulsion to 'sort things out', making things work, preoccupied with purity, righteousness and efficiency.
Cleaning out the closet.
Probably also making sense of a used-up world handed to them by tyrannical Pluto in Leo people. Weiwei has a lot to work with.Virgo is also a big fact checker.
4. Camille Paglia
The Unthinkable: To be a pro pornography feminist, very critical of feminism
Lilith 19 degrees Capricorn, 3rd house
Already, a person with Libra Ascendant square their own Capricorn midheaven is challenged by being somewhat of a contradiction in outward expression to their vocational self. Paglia is infamous for her opposition to modern feminism, while claiming to be a true feminist.
Paglia's Lilith in 3rd sits on a Capricorn Imum Coeli, where the home life is, and so this part of her is strongly marked by experiences in childhood.
Paglia has stated numerous times that her dimorphic views on gender roles stems from growing up in a very gendered romantic culture, as an Italian American.
Lilith in Capricorn is a person who is preoccupied with tradition, and uses tradition as a tool to subvert and dismantle traditions she doesn't agree with. As an earth sign, it is very hard to change this person's mind.
In another study, I noticed that Lilith in Capricorn showed up a few times in the charts of women who embraced masculine, transvestite and butch presentation. These are women challenging Saturn's patriarchy by replacing by appropriating it. Paglia's style emulates this.
5. Woody Guthrie
6. Loujain Al-Hathloul
The Unthinkable: Women driving cars in Saudi Arabia, fighting the male guardianship laws.
Al-Hathloul is a Saudi university student in Canada turned political prisoner in Saudi Arabia.
She was ranked 3rd as most powerful Saudi Arab women in 2015. She has been imprisoned and released several times. She is still in jail being tortured with many women's rights activists (April 2019).
Lilith 19 degrees Libra
Birth time is unknown, and without angles, this Lilith is not making major aspects, which, again, suggests another Lilith "out of control". Not sure though.
Either way, Libra Lilith is a crusader for justice, and insists things be right, and equal, no matter what.
It's a person who will put themselves in a compromised position if it means making the world a better place, and getting their point across. They will inflict upon themselves the injustice to serve as an example, in hopes of educating and changing policy. It would be nice to have a birth time to better contextualize her brave, unthinkable story.
7. Megumi Igarashi
8. Eartha Kitt
The Unthinkable: Making the first lady cry.
9. Sylvester James Jr.
A LGBTQ figure before the movement existed. An openly gay transvestite musician, designer, disco star with gospel roots.
Being open and free about who you are and being happy about it.
Being accepted. Believing you have a voice, and a gift.
